JAXA International Top Young Fellowship (ITYF) in Japan, 2013

Institute of Space and Astronautical Sciences, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (ISAS, JAXA) is offering international fellowship to highly motivated, early-career researchers in any of the space science fields covered by ISAS for work in Japan for 3 (extendable to 5) years. To be eligible for this fellowship, applicants must have a PhD (or equivalent doctoral level degree) and less than 8 years postdoctoral experience. The starting date of the research activity is required be the first day of the month during Japanese FY 2013 (until March 2014). August 31, 2013 is the application deadline.

Study Subject (s): The ITYF is designed to attract outstanding, highly motivated, early-career researchers in any of the space science fields covered by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Sciences (ISAS) to work in Japan for 3 (extendable to 5) years. Fellows will contribute to various researches at ISAS/JAXA and of bringing a positive effect on ISAS’s activities

Course Level: Fellowships is available for pursuing research programme.

Scholarship Description: The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) International Top Young Fellowship (ITYF) was established as a prestigious new fellowship program in 2009. The ITYF is designed to attract outstanding, highly motivated, early-career researchers in any of the space science fields covered by the Institute of Space and Astronautical Sciences (ISAS) to work in Japan for 3 (extendable to 5) years. An excellent remuneration package is offered, including research budget (including travel expense) so that the fellow can extend their international profile, as well as developing collaborations within Japan.

Number of award (s): A few positions are available.

Duration of award (s): The research period duration is basically three (3) years. The contract shall be renewed every fiscal year. The period can be extended up to five (5) years from the time of commencement through review by the ITYF Steering Committee if desired, depending on funding and progress.

What does it cover?
  • Salary: The monthly salary is 791,000 JPY before tax deduction (equivalent to an annual salary of $94,920 USD at a exchange rate of 100 JPY /USD ).
  • Note: In order to support the recovery efforts of the Great East Japan Earthquake, a small salary reduction temporarily applies to all employees of government-oriented agencies. This also applies to the ITYF, and a salary reduction of 6.79% is planned until March 2015. (Due to this reduction, present monthly salary is 737,000 JPY before tax deduction)
  • 2,500,000 JPY (25,000 USD at the above exchange rate) of research funds, which includes support for travel and research expenses, is prepared per fiscal year. Fellows may also apply for competitive research funds (e.g. JSPS’s Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research).
  • Housing and commutation allowance are provided in addition to the salary, if fellows meet certain requirements due to JAXA’s rule.
  • Social and other insurances will be fully provided. -Japanese language lessons are available on-campus a few times a month.

Notification: Successful applicants will be notified by end of November.

How to Apply: A set of the following documents is to be submitted with the application.
  • Applicant’s curriculum vitae.
  • Outline of applicant’s previous research, and future research plan.
  • List of research achievements, including published papers and other publications, etc.
  • Applicant’s three (3) major research papers.
  • Three (3) letters of reference.
The letters of reference must be sent by email directly from your referees’ accounts to ITYF2013-at-jaxa.jp. Please inform of the names of your referees in your email message when you send the application documents. Application documents can be sent to the address by registered mail or international courier service. If so, please state “Application documents for JAXA International Top Young Fellowship” in red ink on the front of the envelope. Application documents will not be returned.
